I am hosting a recycling event for TWO great causes!

1. Canadian Liver Foundation – I am a member of the Giver for Liver marathon group. I have AIH, which is a medical condition where your immune system attacks your liver. I am a healthy and happy individual. My condition is monitored and controlled with medication and lifestyle. In 2010, I raised a little over $15,000, and I am hoping to exceed that in 2011. Thank you to everyone that supported my fundraising efforts in 2010!

2. Alberta Cancer Foundation – Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. I am helping a team of four fundraise $10,000 for the Enbridge Ride to Cure Cancer. A few friends of mine have created a team. One of the team members is undergoing treatment for cancer. The goal is that he will be recovered and will be ready for the ride in June.

Therefore, if you are doing any holiday cleaning, or even spring cleaning in the upcoming months, here are the types of items I am willing to pick up to make it convenient for you to donate, if either of these causes resonate with you. I would love to help you clean out your closets, to make room for any holiday bounties that came in this December, or for any Boxing Week shopping that followed.

LOOKING FOR:
o ALL Clothing of any type
o ALL types of footwear: shoes, boots, slippers
o ALL jewellery and beads: watches, necklackes, rings, brooches, earrings, chains, beads, bracelets, etc.
o All types of accessories: belts, hats, scarves, mittens
o Purses, handbags, wallets, clutches, backpacks, messenger bags, brief cases, etc.
o Books of all kinds

All proceeds from the sale of these items will be split between Canadian Liver Foundation (Giver for Liver) and Alberta Cancer Foundation (Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer).

All unsold items will be recycled or donated, to ensure nothing ends up in the landfill.

I will pick up any large quantities from your home, so that you do not need to haul multiple boxes or bags of items.

Please let the people in your life know that I am willing to pick up their donations and that they would be helping TWO fantastic causes. Items will be re-sold at a variety of sales between now and the end of June.

Collection for these items will be ongoing, to keep replenishing the stock for these fundraising sales.

If you would like to arrange pick up of your donated items, please contact me (Carrie Paxson) at paxsonster@gmail.com.

Thank you for your consideration.

Jennifer and Dan Latreille lost their son Gage last year after being diagnosed late with biliary atresia.

Dan and Jennifer have been advocating for all babies to be tested for biliary atresia if symptoms of jaundice last for 14 days or more.

A petition is attached, and we would appreciate if you could get as many signatures as possible and return the completed petitions to MP Devinder Shory (address on the petition) by September 30, 2010.

reclining, "laid back" banana

At the office, we are quite blessed with receiving fruit bowls stationed in each kitchen. Since each kitchen only receives a small bunch of bananas, the fight is generally on to ensure that we get one before they disappear.

For those of you who also love bananas, my friend helped us all justify our love of bananas with this article that talks about the health benefits.

So co-workers – look out! I don’t want to miss these health benefits, and neither should you! See you in the staff kitchen!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

People have been cultivating the banana for thousands of years. It first spawned in South East Asia and spread throughout the world to become one of the most popular fruits to eat alone and in an endless variety of ice cream desserts.

But aside from being a tasty treat, the banana has a plethora of health benefits to offer. It’s no surprise that many food nutrition guides, especially those that are fitness-focus, recommend the banana as an excellent midday and break time snack. Here are some of the best reasons to pack a banana for lunch next time you head off to work.

Putting you in a good mood
Hitting the gym or sticking to the rigors of a healthy nutrition guide can be hard if you’re feeling down. Starting the day off with a banana can help improve your disposition and give you the mood boost needed to start the day off right. A recent study conducted by MIND found that people suffering from depression often felt much better after eating a banana. The reason: bananas contain the protein trypthophan, which the body converts into serotonin, a neurotransmitter known to make people relax and feel happier.

Another thing which makes the banana a great stress reliever is its high potassium content. Potassium is a mineral that helps normalize a person’s heart rate. By sending oxygen to the brain, potassium also helps to regulate a body’s water balance. When we are under great stress, our potassium levels go down. We can raise them back up by eating a banana.

Need help quitting cigarettes?
Keeping to a healthy food nutrition guide can be all for naught if one does not lead a smoke-free lifestyle. If you are looking for help to quit smoking, consider the banana. Bananas contain the vitamins B6 and B12, which, along with their high content of potassium and magnesium, greatly aid in the body’s recovery from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Avoid Risk of Stroke
Maintaining a good circulatory system is one of the most important things in achieving good health and longevity. Eating foods high in cholesterol can clog up arteries and increase the risk of having a stroke. According to studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas regularly as part of your diet can reduce the risk of dying of a stroke by as much as 40%.

Keep cool
The banana is regarded in many countries as a cooling fruit and prescribed as a way of lowering physical and emotional temperatures. In Thailand, pregnant women keep a diet high in banana to make sure that their babies are born with a cool temperature.

Avoid gaining weight
Work, school, and the pressures of modern life in general can lead to a lot of stress, and in desperate times, people often turn to comfort foods for… well, comfort. Researchers at the Institute of Psychology in Austria, studying 5,000 hospital patients, found that the most obese were the ones who worked in high-pressure jobs. Food cravings, in these cases, were often panic-induced, and led to people gorging on unhealthy snacks like chocolate and chips. To avoid such stress, it’s important to control our blood-sugar levels by eating snacks high on carbohydrates, such as bananas. Eating one every two hours or so can help keep blood-sugar levels steady.

Calming the nerves
Our nervous system needs plenty of B vitamins to keep it from getting overworked. Next time you’re feeling jittery, eat a banana. The fruit’s high B vitamin content will help calm you down and let you focus on enjoying your day.

Cure for the hangover
Nobody likes to go to the gym or to work with a bad hangover from last night’s partying. One of the fastest ways of getting rid of a hangover is to prepare a banana milkshake with honey. Bananas help calm the stomach to get rid of the sickness, and honey helps build up your blood sugar levels. The milk rehydrates your system to help you get going again.

Boost your brainpower
Keeping your brain in shape is as important as keeping a healthy body. In fact, the two come hand in hand. A study conducted at Twickenham, UK, showed that eating bananas during breakfast, break and lunch helped two hundred students improve their exam scores. Research has found that the potassium-rich banana can help people learn by making their pupils more alert.
